Always one to blaze a trail, UNM has done it again by launching a unique sisterhood association for its former national royalty. The UNM Legacy Association flaunts some extremely impressive benefits for keepers of the crown. The association is, by nature, exclusive… the only way in, is with a win! Being a UNM national titleholder leads to an exciting and amazing year filled with opportunities and extraordinary experiences as a national queen, but the experience – and the bonds that are formed among the queens and director – is not just a one-year thing.
“The personal relationships that are made during the reign of a UNM national titleholder are not temporary, they are for a lifetime. The Legacy Association embodies the timeless love and bond that make the UNM experience so unique,” said Jackie Watson, founder and national executive director of USA National Miss. “This sisterhood program is at the very heart of what UNM is all about. It’s a true pageant family, a forever family.”
Membership into Legacy is automatic once the national queen has crowned her successor. A beautiful Legacy crown ring is presented to each former queen as a symbol of the transition from reigning queen to lifelong Legacy member, and will be given during a Legacy exclusive reception held at nationals.
“It’s going to be an amazing party where our Legacy family reunites and welcomes the six newest members,” said Jackie. “This exclusive event will be held each year, and will be a grand reunion to celebrate the former queens while welcoming the outgoing queens into a new phase of their UNM experience that begins once the crown has been passed down. The UNM experience never truly ends, it just transitions into a different phase that lasts for the rest of their lives.”
One of the amazing perks of this sisterhood program include allowing Legacy members to compete at UNM Nationals for free during their age eligibility years. In keeping with the Legacy theme, one of the coolest aspects of this program is that former national queen’s daughters will also be able to compete at UNM Nationals for free as long as they are age eligible. “This is one of my favorite parts of Legacy, is that former royalty get to share the UNM experience with their future daughters,” said Jackie. Other benefits include a yearly retreat, free tickets to all state and national UNM pageants throughout their lifetime, inclusion in Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Legacy-only store with cool apparel and products, and more. Membership is completely free, including the Legacy ring each former queen receives.
Alex Durkee, USA National Miss 2010, and Brittany Vaughn, USA National Miss 2013, are co-directors for this program, and have worked closely with Jackie this past year in planning for the launch of Legacy. The two former queens have teamed up and worked tirelessly throughout the year to prepare for every detail of the program. The Legacy Association will kick-off at Nationals 2015 as UNM celebrates its 5th anniversary. The inaugural Legacy reception will be a huge event at nationals this year, as all former royalty will receive their rings during this event.
