USA National Miss is known for its emphasis on service nationwide, and this holiday season, the UNM nation will be sharing the joy of Christmas with seven orphans in India. Through UNM’s partnership with HUGS Forthward Home Orphanage in India, state and national royalty will “adopt” an orphan this Christmas to send them Christmas gifts.

The children, ranging in age from 6-12, will be treated to a Christmas party in the orphanage, where they will open all the gifts they receive from UNM queens.

The orphanage was founded by UNM state alumni Olivia Wright from Tennessee, after visiting India and seeing the number of homeless orphans there. Olivia is also the founder of HUGS (Help Us Give Shoes) that has distributed over 100,000 shoes worldwide to those in need. UNM’s founder Jackie Watson and her family, are one of the orphanage’s contributing founders. Seven orphans live at the orphanage with a pastor and his wife as their caretakers.
